Anyone who is a fan of music knows all about the best festivals to attend in order to hear the best of the best. There are different festivals year round and around the world that people can attend and soak in all the different styles of music. For those in England and the surrounding areas, Glastonbury is the place to be. With every type of music, this festival can leave all of its attendees happy when they leave.
Glastonbury has officially been around since 1914 when it was mostly a huge festival that involved classical music. With composers and fans, the bohemian lifestyle has always been a huge tie in with Glastonbury. It was not until the 1970s when the hippie lifestyle spread throughout the world, which the popularity of the music festival grew beyond belief. When things started changing in the 70s, bigger names started arriving to play for all of the guests. The Who made an appearance there once, as well as David Bowie. Then, in the 1980s, Glastonbury officially became an annual event. It continued to grow larger and larger until the year 1990, where it held its largest event in history. Though, this even was marred with violence afterward. It continues to be one of the biggest music festivals held in England, and perhaps throughout the world to this day.
In recent years, there has been much controversy over the addition of hip-hop into the Glastonbury festival. Back in 2008, festival goers were unhappy to hear that Jay-Z was going to be headlining the festival. This is become a problem with guests mainly because they feel that having hip-hop or even R&B artists headlining the festival does not speak to what history there is there. It starts as a folk and blues festival and to incorporate some of the mainstream pop culture into it, people feel like the basis of the whole thing is being disrespectful to its roots.
